Open Stage Tonight
Words and Music by Brian Griffin (4-10-01)
It’s Wednesday night and I’m heading down
Heading down Grandview way
Breaking up the weekly routine
There’s a place I want to stay
Listening to the acoustic music
So many great things to hear
Going down to the Open Stage tonight
Down at the Thirsty Ear
People with guitars come in one by one
Drop their name in the old top hat
At 8’o clock Donna draws them out
She lets you know where you are at
If we are lucky, she may do a set
And grace us with her songs
At 8:30 the lights go up
It’s the moment we’ve been waiting for so long
Everthing is gonna be alright
Here at the Open Stage tonight
Over at the bar is Crazy Pete
Sitting and talking with James and Jim
Ebn’s at a table with his group of friends
They may get up and play with him
Lisa’s voice flows like sweet honey
Her heart hanging on every line
Then it’s Al’s turn to get up and play
the crowd goes wild as he slides
Derek is lifted to the stage
His hands move fast to make up for his legs
He plays more notes in 15 minutes
Then the rest of us can ever hope to play
Jerry the owner sings some Beatles songs
And the crowd gets in on the act
Then Jason comes along and sings
A heartfelt song about his cat
Me- I go and play my 3 chord songs
About getting off the Sidelines and Finding My Voice
Hoping that someone has the ears to hear
When they hear, they have a choice
Everthing here is gonna be alright
Hanging at the open stage tonight
There’s the ones who come in once in a while
There’s the ones who play and never come back again
But as long as there is a Wednesday night
There will always be a place for them
I only plan to hang around a little while
But I end up staying all night
Once again caught up in the wild wonder
Of the Open Stage tonight.
It’s Wednesday night and I’m heading down
Heading down Grandview way
Breaking up the weekly routine
There’s a place I want to stay
Listening to the acoustic music
So many great things to hear
Going down to the Open Stage tonight-

Undermine Me

Undermine Me
Words/Music by Brian Griffin (6-28-01)
It won’t take much for you to
Go and undermine me
My plans will fail like a house of cards
Tossed about in the breeze
It may seem like I am in charge
and that I’m wild and free
But all it would take is one look from you
To go and undermine me
Undermine, undermine, undermine me
Knock me down for the count, down on my knees
Cut me to the quick, the end comes so quickly
When you undermine, undermine, undermine me
I talk fast, but my legs they shake
I’m ready to buckle and fall
Tryin to keep ahold of myself
It’s gonna take my all
Smiling through facade smile
Slowly breaking apart
Ending up being all finished
Before I even get to start
(chorus)
I’m being undermined by all I say and do
Caught- stuck in a rut that I put myself through
You may want to try to let yourself in
But my guard keeps falling down again and again
My guard keeps falling down again and again and again
When you undermine me-
(instrumental)
It doesn’t take much for me to
Undermine myself
I do it all- without help
from anybody else
Maybe tonight will be the time
When everything will go alright
So here I sit- a walking wreck
Ready to crumble at your sight
(Repeat chorus twice)
It won’t take much for you to
Go and undermine me

Read Your Mind
Music by Evan Maxwell, Lyrics by Brian Griffin (2-25-86)
I know that I’m not perfect
I never said I was
But you still took me in
And gave me your sweet love
Now something seemed to change
Your mind’s in a different frame
In the picture of your thoughts
Am I the only flame
Why aren’t we close anymore
Why isn’t everything fine
Why don’t you talk to me
I wish I could read your mind
To see how you feel inside
I know that your not perfect
Honey I don’t care
You’re all in this world I need now
So darling please be there
But something is different now
You have changed my dear
Now I need you more than ever
But you don’t want me near
Why don’t you kiss me?
Why can’t I be with you all the time
Why don’t you say you love me?
I need to read your mind
To see if you’re still mine
I know that we are not perfect
No one can ever be
But I have a real strong feeling
That you were meant for me
I was made for you
For how long, I don’t know
But, I’m praying daily now
That our love will groww and grow
Why don’t you hold me?
Why don’t you show me your lines?
Why don’t you miss me?
I need to read your mind
I need you all the time

Finding My Voice
Words and Music by Brian Griffin (7-12-00)
Breaking down the silence of too many quiet years
My mind is clear, my mind is clear
There’s a time to go out and the the time is here
My mind is clear, my mind is clear
Take the stage and I share my songs
The moment fades, it never lasts too long
Finally get the courage up to make a choice-
I’m finding my voice
Blowing the dust off my notebooks of words
So much to learn, so much to learn
Take my guitar out of the case as a stomach churns
So much to learn, so much to learn
But I’ll be alright, I know I’ll be
‘Cause I’m finally doing something in which I believe
Hoping now to create a joyful noise-
I’m finding my voice
I’m finding my voice, making my stand
On the strength of these words, these strings and my hands
How it will all turn out, it’s not for me to decide
All I know is that I have to try
I’m just another singer singing another song
The world spins on, the world spins on
What will it matter when in time, we’ll all be gone
The world spins on, the world spins on
It may not make a difference in one hundred years
But this night is ours, everybody here
It’s in these fleeting moments of life-that we rejoice
Thank you for helping me find my voice
